While it is a 4-hour journey from Denver, a visit to the Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is worth the effort. I made sure I was there as the sun came up, which was about 50 minutes after the “normal” sunrise time because the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the east block the sun until it gets fairly high in the sky. Being present in this vast land of beauty at sunrise was a wonderful experience.
